The Thomas/Padgett Home

The Padgett Home was built sometime around 1842, it appears to have been a story
and a half at this time. It was purchased along with the surrounding land by Fleming Thomas
in 1848.
Sometime between 1842 and 1865 the top several rows of logs were added,
topped by log rafters.
In 1865 the home was remodeled and a left wing and kitchen
were added. At that time the logs were furred out and clapboard siding covered the
exterior, the interior was plastered. The timberframed entry with brick
nogging wall infill is all that remains of that period. The entry to the home
also contained the staircase. Turning left in the entry led you into the "new" addition.
The kitchen, of one story, was straight back past the stairs to the south.
The 1865 timberframe addition and rafters are sawn from red oak. The log cabin is white oak
with poplar logs at "2nd floor level" and at the level of the original top log
and of the present top log. Poplar is easier to saw, chisel, and nail to.

We are currently trying to restore the home and replace logs that have rotted or
been destroyed by insects. I will try to post pictures here as the work goes on.
Please understand that the jobsite is hazardous, I invite you to enjoy a tour of
the project here. If there is something you would like a picture of, feel free to e-mail me.
Any history about the home would be appreciated. The bottom right photo is corncob
and mud chinking that we found buried under the cement chinking.
