The
Thomas/Padgett Home
We called
in Rod Broman of Broman Mastercraft to do chimney repairs on the
old brick chimney. He ground out and repointed most of the
exterior joints and replaced several bricks with spalled faces
using bricks we had salvaged earlier. He also removed the top
several courses of brick that had been repaired sometime in the
1970's. The first picture is a "before" shot.

The old
chimney had a "bell" at the top originally. It had been lost in
the 1970's repair. Rod restored the top to it's original shape.
While he was there we also asked him to parge the back side
adjacent to the log wall to positively seal and strengthen it. He
also sprayed a silane solution on the bricks to waterproof
them.

We were
visited by the great granddaughter of Fleming Thomas's, the
original family owner of the cabin. Carol Fishel was down from
Randallstown, Maryland researching family cemetaries. I took her
across Beaverdam Rd to the cemetary on the hill to the north of
the home. While we talked she said she had some older pictures of
the house. She sent me copies. One photo is above, showing the
house as it looked between 1865 and 1965.
Here is also a picture of David Kirk, holding the scabbard and
bayonette, showing Rod a sword that was found between the
clapboard and log wall during the 1965 remodel. The rifle was
found around the same time in the attic. The stock had been
broken in several places. It bears the date 1877 and a crown
stamp.
