The Thomas/Padgett Home

back before

One mystery in the construction of the home has us puzzled. On the south looking up at the area where the second floor joists go you can see notches for the joists sawn and chiselled out of the poplar log. This is just above where the logs have separated in the photo above . On the north side the notches were never chopped out, they are sawn but not chiselled out. The present second floor is set above this level by one log, giving a nicer ceiling height. What were they using the chiseled out south side notches for?

Judge and I visited another cabin in Gold Hill that had fallen. It was a one story from all appearances. A beautiful wide, arch topped stone fireplace was still standing at one end. The logs were pretty much too far gone to use, but in the wreckage I saw a header log, with the same notches, sawn but not knocked out. The old crews were allowing for future second floors.
